Vitelli Maglieria Italiana is a Milanese ethical brand focused on regenerative fabric production and cutting-edge knitwear design.
Launched to the wholesale market in 2019,Vitelli has been praised for it’s radical approach on:
SUSTAINABILITY
Producing only with 100% reclaimed yarn from Italian knitwear industry leftover.
INCLUSIVITY
Championing social, racial and gender inclusion inside and outside the company, counting on a diverse brand team and a global conscious community.
INNOVATION
Committing to a “circular” production system by redefining the entire life-cycle, from unique Made-in-Italy fabrics design to the brand’s certified regenerative processes (Vitelli Doomboh® range)and all the way to responsible clothing design based on minimizing waste.
"Vitelli is an Italian fabric maker.
With highly manufactured machinery, saved from imminent extinction, we fabricate compositions of threads born solely from pre-existing fibers.
Vitelli is a cooperative entity that works in equity with all the biological elements it includes, human and non-human.
We produce meshes and knits capable of warping into the mosaic of climatic, geophysical, and cosmic characteristics composing our planet. Taking care of it lovingly."
Vitelli lives to experience the purest enjoyment that comes from craft: to see the joy generated by alchemically woven threads of primordial importance exploding on the individual and collective bodies.
Reclaiming durable goods for any future time, Vitelli belongs to the great tradition of Italian artisan luxury.
Vitelli fashion narrative draws inspiration from the original “Gioventù Cosmica” (1980-1984), an Italian post-hippie club scene, referencing music and style as a source for cultural innovation and social improvement.
The Organic Knitting Theatre
The Vitelli OKT (Organic Knitting Theatre) is the design and prototyping atelier of Spazio Vitelli, in the lively Porta Venezia neighborhood in Milan.
Here, reclaimed yarns are tested on domestic knitting machines, and eventually dispatched to the different fabrication suppliers in order to be regenerated.
Reclaimed yarns come in different gauges and compositions, unpredictable colors and limited quantities. We “organically” create on the basis of what we harvest – a bit like cooking with local and seasonal ingredients.
While most of the yarn “harvest” is used for the Doomboh® range, limited quantities and “end-of-cone” leftovers are stored in the atelier and used for hand-worked, custom, one-of-a-kind creations, to become the Vitelli OKT offering – available exclusively online on the Vitelli e-shop and through trunk shows at spazio Vitelli.
THE VITELLI "GIOVENTÙ COSMICA" STYLE:
Inspired by the original Italian 1980s "Cosmic Youth"
In the early Eighties, a new music-driven subculture developed around the Cosmic, a club set near the shores of Lake Garda. Gradually propelling to other North Italy clubs, the Cosmic scene became popular among the young post-hippy generation with the motto “Music is Culture” (La musica è Cultura). Clubs could host a maximum of 1000 people, but parking lots and nearby beaches often saw up to 10,000, gathering for entire weekends to light fires, listen to music, dance, smoke hash, and experience a mystical, peaceful way of being together. The crowd drawn by these venues became known as Cosmic Youth - “Gioventù Cosmica”. This drive to find alternative, communal ways of living, empowered by music and in full respect of nature, has inspired Vitelli’s practice since the very beginning.
In terms of style, the Cosmic Youth was perhaps less coded and less disruptive than other subcultures, however, it reflected a strong cultural identity which combined hippy references, early 1980s glamour, ethnic garments from the hippy trail, torn Levi’s jeans, punk leather jackets, and all-Italian handmade sweaters. A flea market aesthetic enriched by local craft and by the colorful vibes of faraway countries.
Travelling was at the center of Cosmic Youth culture as it represented a vital escape route from the boundaries of Western society. Vitelli engages with this concept of “existential traveling”, translating it into contemporary slang and expanding it across boarders.
